Data Carpentry Workshop: Introduction to R and RStudio for Genomics

Future event

The Carpentries project comprises the Software Carpentry, Data Carpentry, and Library Carpentry communities of instructors, helpers and supporters who share a mission to teach foundational computational and data science skills to researchers.

13 January 2025
9h 17h
Coworking Etena - Bâtiment hygiène 1, Pl. de l'Hôpital, 67000 Strasbourg

Registrations will be open from 03/12/24 to 16/12/24. The Data Carpentry workshop will take place in Strasbourg on 13, January 2025.

What is a Data Carpentry workshop?

A Data Carpentry workshop is a hands-on training that covers the introductory computational skills needed for data management and analysis in all domains of research. Our lessons are build on the existing knowledge of learners to enable them to quickly apply skills learned to their own research. Our initial target audience is learners who have little to no prior computational experience. We create a friendly environment for learning to empower researchers and enable data driven discovery.

Short tutorials alternate with practical exercises, and all instruction is done via live coding. A Carpentry workshop is taught by at least one trained and badged instructor. Over the course of the workshop, instructors teach the curriculum called "Genomics": lesson: "Data Analysis and Visualisation in R". This lesson is an additional lesson to the genomics workshop. The focus of the lesson selected is on working with R, a programming language, in order to analyze and vizualize data in bioinformatics.

Lesson content is available online

Local session

Dates confirmed: 13/01/2025, 9am-5pm

Program and requirements : https://unistra.github.io/2025-01-13-Strasbourg/

The lessons of the workshop are to teach:

  1. Introducing R and RStudio, R Basics
  2. Using packages, Data Wrangling and Visualization

Prerequisites:

This lesson assumes that learners have no prior experience with the tools covered in the workshop. However, learners are expected to have some familiarity with biological concepts, including the concept of genomic variation within a population. Participants should bring their own laptops and plan to participate actively.

Software to install:

To participate, you will need access to R and RStudio and an up-to-date web browser. Prior to the workshop, please either:

NB: Posit is the new company name of the former RStudio company, follow the links to the wikipedia pages to learn more about the product RStudio, and about the Posit PBC company.

The Carpentries maintains a list of common issues that occur during installation as a reference for instructors that may be useful on the Configuration Problems and Solutions wiki page.

May you have any other issue in the installation, please contact at cobolet[at]unistra.fr or come 30 minutes in advance to the workshop so that we can help.

You can ask for help during face to face sessions :

Make & Code sessions on Tuesdays (Lab numérique, Atrium, Esplanade Campus)

Make & Code sessions on Thursdays (Lab numérique, Atrium, Esplanade Campus)
