The Institut Charles Sadron (UPR 22) regular Tuesday seminar will host Lennart Martens (IPHC/UGhent). Lennart Martens will share his experience on research data & open science.
Let’s skip the niceties and get straight to the point: open science is here, and it is here to stay.
We’ll not pay any attention to those who are still trying (hopelessly) to put open science back in the box, nor will we worry about the (hard, yet arguably somewhat dull) work that needs to be done to get everything truly operational.
After all, these things are really only details that we’ll likely not even remember 15 to 20 years from now.
Instead, let’s focus on what we will be doing in 15 or 20 years from now, and use these insights to get an early start on that sweet open science action!
We will do so by having a look at the many reasons why we might make science open, and especially on those reasons that are worthwhile (i.e., those that create opportunities). We’ll also have a look at what is holding us back right now; the speedbumps on the road to opportunity. After all, if any of us are going to invest some effort into making things work, best invest that effort where it yields the most benefit! And, as many of the opportunities will naturally revolve around the use and re-use of public data, we’ll look at the different forms this can take, and illustrate these with some published and unpublished results from my own group. Finally, we can dream a bit about the future of open science, with the next step being squarely on you: to help bring that bright future about!
