Methodology, code and data source

The data sources, methodology and code used to produce this barometer are based on those of the Open Science Barometer proposed by the University of Lorraine, itself inspired by the French Open Science Barometer.

The source code of the two barometers are available in French on Gitlab (University of Lorraine) and Github (Ministry of Higher Education and Research).

Data sources

The data on publications from 2016 to 2020 for which at least one author is affiliated to the University of Strasbourg, are taken from extractions made in March 2021 from the following sites:

APC data for the University of Strasbourg are not yet available.

The methodology used

After extraction, the data are cleaned following the method indicated by the University of Lorraine to obtain the list of Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) of the University of Strasbourg publications 2016-2021.

This list is then enriched by the code of the French Open Science Barometer, which uses UnPaywall to add, in particular, the data indicating the status of each publication: open access (or closed), type of access (open archive, publisher, both).

The file obtained is finally completed by information from the Ministry of Higher Education dataset listing all publications with a French affiliation and Digital Object Identifier (DOI). This processing adds a scientific discipline to each publication.

The algorithm created by the Ministry was not always able to assign a discipline to each article; it will then indicate "unknown" in the "scientific field" column. To avoid displaying this category when viewing the open access rate by discipline, it has been added manually in the file for the University of Strasbourg publications of the year 2019 concerned.

Limitations:

Only publications with Digital Object Identifier (DOI) are taken into account by UnPaywall, which leaves out a certain number of publications, particularly in Social Science and Humanities (SSH).

The barometer code

The code used to produce this barometer is largely based on the code of the University of Lorraine, with some adaptations:

  • addition of the graph representing the proportion of publications in open access since 2016
  • adaptation of the data visualization according to the University of Strasbourg graphic charter
  • addition of code

The code, the data and the queries are available on Gitlab.

Proportion of 2019 publications in open access  measured in 2021

This graph shows, for the year 2019, the proportion of publications by researchers at the University of Strasbourg available in open access. The type of open access is also indicated: publications deposited only in open archives, publications deposited with the publisher and in open archives, publications deposited only with the publisher (Gold open access).

Only publications with a persistent identifier (DOI) are represented in this graph.

Proportion of publications 2016 to 2020 with open access  measured in 2021

This graph shows the proportion of publications available in open access since 2016. Indeed, since the law for a Digital Republic of 2016 (art. 30), researchers can deposit their article in author's version in an open archive with an embargo ranging from 6 to 12 months, depending on the field.

The visualisation also takes into account publications from 2020. This data will evolve as embargoes are lifted.

Evolution of the rate of open access to publications  measured in 2021

This graph shows the rate of evolution of open access to University of Strasbourg researchers' publications since 2016. The rate for 2020 is not definitive, as some publications are still under embargo.
The number of publications indicated under each column is the number of publications with Digital Object Identifier (DOI) per year, open and closed access.

Open access rate to publications 2019 by discipline  measured in 2021

This graph details the open access rate for 2019, by discipline and by type of open access. The number shown under each discipline name is the number of publications with Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) by discipline for 2019, open and closed access.

Rate of open access to publications 2019 by publisher  measured en 2021

This graph shows the rate of open access by publisher for the year 2019, with the type of open access. Only the top 10 publishers by number of publications are shown. The number shown under each publisher's name is the number of publications with Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) by publisher for 2019, open and closed access.

Open access rate 2019 in relation to the number of publications by discipline  measured in 2021

This visualization presents, for the year 2019, the rate of open access by discipline, related to the number of publications.
